he Baptism in the Spirit's effectiveness in reactivating baptism consists in this: finally man contributes his part -- namely, he makes a choice of faith, prepared in repentance, that allows the that allows the work of God to set itself free and to emanate all its strength. It is as if the plug is pulled and the light is switched on. The gift of God is finally "untied" and the Spirit is allowed to flow like a ftragrance in the Christian life.

During the night between Friday and Saturday, in the early morning hours of 10 June 2017, the Lord called back to Him a great man, Father Peter Hocken. He died at the age of almost 85. He was a servant of God, a friend, a priest who loyally served the Body of Christ until his last breath, all the world round. The Lord gave him an extraordinary intellect and wisdom, together with the experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit. He also received from God the talent and ability to provide specific and comprehensible theological explanations and descriptions of spiritual experiences that are taking place within the Church, notably after the Second Vatican Council.

We all know, based on our personal experience, that the cooperation with most intelligent people is not often easy. These people usually do not establish friendship easily. It is interesting also that university graduates with an honour degree usually do not fit in to the working environment in the best way and that their high intellect is of a little help in overcoming personal or marriage crises.

The aim of the “Jesus Heals” prayer gatherings is experiencing the fact that God is Love. He is Love that wants to give itself to other people. God wants to show us His mercy even through healing, signs, wonders, and miracles.

  3. The process (How to do it – first receive the gift)
  4. Common symbols and their common meanings
  5. Types of dream
  6. Take general questions about dreams
  7. Do some interpretations for people
  8. Pray for impartation of gift

1. Biblical basis

The evidence that God uses dreams to communicate important information and revelation is found throughout scrip.

  • 24 specific dreams mentioned in scrips
  • 16 in the OT are described
  • 6 in NT (4 of these to Joseph, 1 to magi - see Matt chaps1-2, other to Pilate’s wife).

And there are many more references to dreams than just the dreams recorded themselves. For example the Lord Himself says in Num 12/6:

“If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make My-self known to him in a vision and speak to him in a dream”
As He does to Jacob in his ladder dream Gen 28/12 or to Solomon 1 Kings 3/5 in his wisdom request dream

Some dream revelation is:

  • personal (eg Pharoah’s baker and butler Gen 40/8 or Jacob’s sheep dream Gen 31/10)
  • some to do with the nation (eg Pharoah’s 7 fat cows and ears dreams, Gen 41/1),
  • some to do with world history and most of the planet (eg Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the statue, Dan 2/31.
  • some to do with all three eg Jacob’s ladder dream Gen 28/12 where he is promised a land and a people by whom the whole world will be blessed
  • Some, in fact most, of the dreams recorded in the NT are to do with ensuring that Jesus is born safely and looked after well, so God takes dreams very seriously and uses them to speak important things to His people.
  • God assures us through the prophet Joel (2/28) that He will do so still in our days too as Peter quotes in Acts 2/16-18 that now the Spirit will be poured out on everyone “all mankind” (not just God’s servants) and “…your old men shall dream dreams”
  • (the bibles idea of an old man was clearly different from our modern understanding!!)

So why does God use dreams to speak to us?

Sometimes because that is the only time He can get a word in edgeways, cos it is the only time we are quiet and still. Job 33/14-16 says He uses dreams to speak to us even though we don’t listen to Him, with sealed instructions. They are sealed because the dream comes as a whole to us as God intends with no interference from us, and remains sealed up until we can find someone to interpret it to us. Job goes on to say though that man hears God’s voice thru dreams but disregards it and as a result becomes sick, but if an interpreter of dreams comes to show the dreamer what God is saying to him then he is restored to health and prays to God and is made righteous! Wow! So the interpreter of dreams is used to evangelise and restore the dreamer to health. If we had any doubt about the value of dream interpretation this scrip alone should convince us.

As I said earlier He uses mysterious symbolic dreams to speak to us for the same reason also that Jesus would say nothing to the people except in mysterious symbolic parables!

Only those interested enough in the truth will take the time to dig it out and therefore only these individuals will bear the responsibility to act on the knowledge they gain. The more we know the more we are responsible to act on that knowledge-scary thought! See Prov 25/2

“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.”

And I’m sure you know that you are all kings, don’t you?

Another reason God uses mysterious dreams is because, for us limited beings, mystery is part of who He is so they expresses something of Him. You are being mysterious again aren’t You?...dialogue

Lastly it is because they are very powerful ways of communicating with us, especially us living now in the west, in Europe. We are so cerebral, mental and images/symbols get right past the walls we have built to keep out the words and ideas we are bombarded with daily by advertisers etc. The emotional effect of the two versions of “The Snowman” for example or the power of mime.

3. The process

Intro.

Of course if there is nobody to interpret our dreams then they will stay a complete mystery so clearly if God is going to give us the gift of dreams He will also give us the gift of interpretation.

Like any spiritual gift we need “to earnestly desire it” (as Paul says twice 1 Cor 12/31 and 1 Cor 14/1) and part of the reason I am here is to help you come into the place of doing just that. Most Christians don’t even know it is available and so never ask for it.

At the end of this session I will pray a prayer of impartation of the gift for those who would like it.

Like any spiritual gift it is what it says on the tin i.e. a gift, it is not earned, by goodness or holiness or a masters in psychology, in other words anyone can ask for it, and if it won’t hurt you then I believe God will give it to you.

So to begin interpreting dreams ask God for the gift. (Took Joseph years in slavery and prison before he learnt to say to pharaoh about the interpretation:

“it is not in me – God will give an answer” (Gen 41/16)

Then begin practicing on your own dreams until you are confident enough to try on someone else. Helping people hear from God is a precious and wonderful thing and is wonderful for evangelism and discipleship. Anyway here is a process of interpreting someone’s dreams that has worked for me.

The Process of Interpreting Dreams (handout)

  1. When someone tells you their dream show them it is important by the attention you give them.
  2. Ask them to tell it from the beginning with as much detail as possible.
  3. Tell it back to them as you have understood it, allowing them to correct your understanding as you go.
  4. Pray out loud: “The interpretation of dreams belongs to You Lord so please give us the meaning of this dream” – this witnesses to the person that this is of God and keeps the focus of you so they don’t think you are some kind of magician. (Joseph’s earthly father gave him a coat of many colours, a thing of pride and his heavenly Father spent the next 20 years or so trying to get it off him again: until he admitted that dream interpretation is all of God he stayed in prison!)
  5. Think about the elements of the dream as a string of symbols and ask yourself, if this element is a symbol what might it represent? Start with the bit that seems most obvious to you. Then work on the other bits always trying to see each symbol in relationship to the other symbols in the dream (see the symbol list for help).
  6. Internally ask God for wisdom re what to say about what you understand
  7. Share the interpretation of the bits you are most sure of and you feel God wants you to speak out (“two funnelled listening” ie to God and to the person is very important throughout).
  8. Get feedback on what you have said and explore the symbols you are less sure about with the person. Often meaning comes out of your dialogue with them.
  9. If they are open to it pray for them a simple blessing with regards to the meaning God has revealed. This may involve “cutting away” things that are holding them back spiritually but again only with their permission.
  10. If there are still elements unresolved but central to the meaning of the dream advise them to “ask for another dream” to clarify this one just before they sleep. This may be their first prayer even if an ambiguous one!

Common symbols and their common meanings

Here are some common symbols that tend to occur in dreams and the meaning they often have. Be aware that we always need to ask the Holy Spirit about the actual meaning, for example someone’s father may be just that and not a symbol at all!

Also symbols are individual, eg a dog may be a companion/a source of unconditional love to one person and a source of fear for another. (I’ll give these out as a handout afterwards so don’t feel you need to record them now).

Give egs of a few of these, 3, 10, 12

  1. Future revelation dream
  2. Satan’s plan (often muted or grey-scale)
  3. God’s plan within satan’s – one bit shows up in vivid colour often as the key to escape/victory.
